Intelligent Document Processing (IDP)
Intelligent Document Processing
Most of what your processes need is sitting inside documents nobody has time to key in. Intelligent document processing reads them, pulls out the data, checks it, and hands it to the workflows and AI agents that do the rest.
Powered by Artificial Intelligence
Intelligent document processing (IDP) uses AI to turn the documents flowing into your organization into structured data your systems can act on. That means fewer hours spent rekeying, faster reporting, and more documents that move end to end without anyone touching them.
What Is Intelligent Document Processing?
IDP uses AI and machine learning to automatically extract, organize, and process data from many document types. Unlike basic capture, it classifies documents by type, reads context around a field rather than a fixed position on the page, and converts unstructured and semi-structured data from multiple sources into data your systems can use.
Naviant’s team came in, workshopped with our leadership, and began working towards implementing both IDP solutions.

Why Intelligent Document Processing
Say Goodbye to Manual Data Entry
More than 80% of critical information is trapped inside unstructured and unmanaged documents.
IDP uses artificial intelligence to reduce manual effort and automatically extract unstructured and semi-structured data from various document types such as invoices, contracts, EOBs, claims, and forms.
Reduce Processing Times
Intelligent data capture automatically extracts information from your documents, freeing your team from time-consuming manual document processing.
Improve Accuracy
Minimize the risk of human error with advanced technology that combines AI, optical character recognition, and machine learning.
Scale Without Rebuilding
Start with one document-heavy process, prove the value, then extend the same foundation to the next one instead of starting over.
Improve Compliance & Security
Automated workflows ensure audit trails are maintained, and complex documents and sensitive information are handled securely.
How to Use It
Which Documents and Processes Can IDP Handle?
IDP applies anywhere documents carry the data a process needs, across departments and industries. Turning those documents into structured data is what lets workflows run and AI agents act, which is the step most organizations are missing when a pilot stalls. Our AI Optimization Team finds the processes worth automating, builds them on one governed foundation, and keeps improving them after go-live.

Technologies
Combine Technologies for Tailored Solutions
We solve complex challenges by finding the right combination of tools. IDP, automation platforms, content management, and agentic AI are layers of one connected foundation rather than separate purchases, and running them together is what makes an Agentic Enterprise.
Featured Technologies:
Agentic Automation
use your enterprise knowledge, data, and systems to take action across real business processes. Agents handle the reading, checking, and routing inside policy and guardrails you set, and your people keep the decisions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial intelligence (AI) lets systems learn from data and identify patterns, so people can make faster, better-informed decisions with the evidence in front of them.
Enterprise Content Management
Harness the power of an ECM solution to connect your content and data to the core processes and systems that power your business.
Intelligent Document Processing FAQs
What is intelligent document processing?
Intelligent document processing (IDP) uses AI and machine learning to turn documents into structured data your systems can act on. It classifies a document by type, locates and extracts the fields that matter, validates them against your systems of record, and passes clean data to the workflows and AI agents that do the rest of the work.
How is IDP different from OCR?
OCR converts an image of text into characters. That is one step inside IDP, not the whole thing. IDP adds classification, so it knows an invoice from a claim form, and context-based extraction, so it finds the invoice total wherever it sits on the page rather than at fixed coordinates. It also validates what it extracts and routes what it cannot resolve.
What kinds of documents can IDP handle?
Structured forms, semi-structured documents like invoices and explanations of benefits, and unstructured documents like contracts and correspondence. Accuracy varies with document quality and how much the format varies between senders, so a short assessment on your actual documents is worth more than any vendor benchmark.
Does IDP actually understand the documents it reads?
Not in the way a person does, and it is worth being precise about that. IDP models classify documents and read the context around a field, which is why they handle format variation that template-based capture cannot. They do not comprehend meaning or intent. Where a decision depends on understanding what a document means, that decision stays with a person.
Do we still need IDP if we are moving toward AI agents?
Yes, and the two work together. An agent cannot act on a document it cannot read. IDP is what turns the invoice, claim, or contract into data the agent can reason over and the workflow can route. Organizations that skip this layer are usually the ones whose agent pilots stall.
How long does it take to get an IDP use case into production?
It depends on document variety, integration requirements, and how clean your source systems are. The honest answer is that a single well-scoped document type moves faster than most people expect and a sprawling multi-format program takes longer.
